You’ll want to book short-term accommodation for your initial arrival in the UK, as you’ll need time to view apartments in person. We recommend booking at least 2 weeks of short-term accommodation, as the process of finding a rental can take time, especially in London.
Technically, nothing prevents you from renting an apartment from abroad (as long as you have all the legal documents to rent). However, this is a difficult approach and therefore we do not recommend it. Here’s why: 1) There is a lot of scams online in the property market. Making a payment without seeing the physical apartment is a big risk and exposes you to fraudsters. 2) There are aspects of a property of a home that cannot be assessed online. These are things like the smell, the atmosphere of the street, the noises, and so on…
If you decide to rent without physically being in the UK, follow precautions - Here’s some of our expert tips! - Ask someone you know in the UK to check the apartment for you in person. - Rent with a verified entity (like a well-renounced estate agency, for example). - Make sure you have strong rental contracts in place that benefit you as a tenant.
Can I lose my holding deposit if I don’t get the property?
Your holding deposit should be refunded in full if the landlord decides not to rent to you. However, the landlord or agent could keep your holding deposit if you:
1) Decide not to rent the property 2) Give wrong or misleading information 3) Cannot pass a 'right to rent' immigration check They cannot keep your money for any other reason.
How do I trust that the landlord will pay my deposit back?
In the UK, Landlords are must place your tenants’ deposit in a tenancy deposit protection (TDP) scheme by law. These government-backed schemes ensure that tenants will get their deposit back if they:
1) Meet the terms of the tenancy agreement 2) Do not damage the property 3) Pay the rent and bills
Your landlord must put your deposit in the scheme within 30 days of getting it. At any time during your tenancy, you can apply to a county court if your landlord does not use a tenancy deposit protection.

Renting with a Pet in London
Renting with a pet in London is not impossible, but it can be a difficult task. Follow these steps to make your home search for you and your furry friend easier and smoother:
Explore our verified list of Pet-Friendly Buildings in London
❌ Avoid Zone 1: The closer to the center of the city, the more difficult your search will be. This is because the demand is very high and offer quite low, so landlords can afford to have more requirements, which often include “no pets”, unfortunately. Your search in further away zones will be easier.
✅ Ask estate agents for pet-friendly properties: Agents often get first dibs in the best properties, and they’ll be able to alert you when a pet friendly home goes into the market in your desired area.
✅ Use Zoopla’s “Pets allowed” filter: Most home search websites don’t have a pet filter, but Zoopla does, under their “ Must-haves” filter.
✅ Use OpenRent’s “Accept Pet” filter: Similarly to Zoopla, you can filter by the properties where the landlord accepts pets in this website. Take advantage of it!
❌ Avoid seeing properties without confirming that they accept your pet: This will feel like a waste of time and can be quite discouraging if you like the property and they don’t accept your application later on!
