Start your Healthcare Registration👇

Not all Expats have the right to National Healthcare, so before you try to register, you have to check your rights.

The rule of thumb is the following:

❌ If you are required to have Private Healthcare coverage to live in Spain, you DO NOT have the right to National Healthcare. ✅ If you are NOT required to have Private Healthcare coverage to live in Spain you HAVE the right to National Healthcare

You will have found out if you need Private Health Insurance at the time of applying for your Visa or NIE/TIE, but if you are not sure here’s a way you can check:

You can download a Certificate that proves you have access to National Healthcare following these steps - Its recommended to download and have in hand during registration (Step 2)

1. Go to this website and click on “Consultar derecho asistencia sanitaria”

2. In “Datos del asegurado” add your personal details:

• Nombre: Write your Name
• Primer apellido: Write your first Surname
• Tipo de identificación: Select “NIE” if you have a NIE or TIE Card
• Número de documento: Type your NIE Number
• Número de afiliación S.S.: Write here your Social Security Number
• Fecha de nacimiento (dd/mm/aaaa): Add here your date of birth in this format dd/mm/yyyy
• Correo electrónico: Write an email so you can get notifications about this to your inbox

3. Mark with a cross (X) the box under “Documento acreditativo del derecho a asistencia sanitaria pública” so you can later download the certificate if you have the right to national healthcare

4. Click “Consultar” to see the answer in the next screen

Each Province has their own Healthcare Card and services you can use to access Health Services. The process to get your Healthcare Card is different in every Province. Below are the most popular ones:

If you live in Madrid

• Find your Local health centre - Every home has a “Centro de Salud” allocated. You can find yours here, by adding your Home Address details and click on “Buscar”
• Register at your local health centre - Go to the Health Centre with your NIE and “Certificado de Empadronamiento”. They will be able to register you as a patient in the Health Centre and request your Healthcare Card
• Once this is done you have access to the National Healthcare System! 🥳

If you live in Cataluña (Barcelona)

In Barcelona, the Healthcare System is controlled by the Servicio Catalán de la Salud (CatSalut).
You can request your CatSalut card online, by filling in this request online form with your personal details, and after submission, CatSalut will review your right to Healthcare and Empadronamiento and get back to your via email with a document you can use to access Healthcare services until you receive your physical card in the mail.

If you live in Comunidad Valenciana (Valencia)

• Find your Local health centre - Every home has a “Centro de Salud” allocated. Go to this website and in “Acceso por domicilio” add your Home Address and click on “Ver mis centro sanitarios” to see which Health Centres you have access to.
• Register at your local health centre - Go to the Health Centre with your NIE and “Certificado de Empadronamiento”. They will be able to register you as a patient in the Health Centre and request your Healthcare Card
• Once this is done you have access to the National Healthcare System! 🥳

If you live in Andalucía (Málaga)

• Find your Local health centre - Every home has a “Centro de Salud” allocated. You can find a list of Health centers here, or you can search on Google Maps for “Centro de Salud” to find your nearest one.
• Register at your local health centre - Go to the Health Centre with all the documents listed below - They will be able to register you as a patient in the Health Centre and request your Healthcare Card
  • NIE
  • Certificado de Empadronamiento
  • Certificate proving your right to National Healthcare (See Step 1)
  • The local healthcare form filled. You can download it here.
• Once this is done you have access to the National Healthcare System! 🥳
